Sail Simulator 5

Development

At Stentec with Sail Simulator 5 development includes players in the process.

continuous evolution

The game has been on sale for months, though actually it's been more like a alpha version. For clarification: in software development an alpha-version is not a stable version. Functionality and features are still added. That's the way with Sail Simulator 5 too. Players get the their hands on a fully functional too which features are added regularly.

status quo

In the beginning there were only 2 boats and one map, no down-wind-sails, half a year later there are 4 boats, 2 maps, downwind sails, back-stays, lee and luvward sheets, engine or oars to get out of the harbour. Let alone with GPS and an autopilot you can sail a boat 24/7, no to mention that you trim your boat by moving the crew to leeward or windward. The Volvo 70 comes with dagger-boards and swing-keel.  You don't have to fear controling your boat, almost everything that cab be trimmed manually there's an automatic too.

You will get a software package, which is as good as without bugs. Some planned features and functionality is missing yet, burt players therefore can point out future features and functionality.

As the developers say

In 2009 our team will continue to improve Sail Simulator using the latest technologies. Free updates with new boats and options will become available for license holders. You can follow the development on our website. Your suggestions are appreciated.

what is next

In the developers blog you can read what's up:

For the next update our team is working on the following interesting subjects:

  • Spectacular tropical sailing area Paradise Island in Thailand(Kho Hong)
  • Transparent water. You can see the shallow spots and the rocks under the surface
  • Improvements on Scheveningen with amongst others turning wind turbine
  • Registering and entering multiplayer sessions for the professionals.
  • Create mulltiplayer sessions for direct tour- or regatta sailing with others
  • Making your own race area by placing buoys
  • Land dependent wind shears and tell tales on the sail.
  • NMEA export for navigation training with WinGPS 4.

A candidate boat for the next update is the open F18 catamaran class. The 470 will be perfected with help from the International 470 class and Team Coster.

Version 5.1

With version 5.1 there now is an on-line lobby you can track from you browser.  Also you can now create your own maps in the 4 venues.

  • enhanced multiplayer mode
  • improved surroundings in the venues
  • new venue
  • create own maps
  • shifts and puffs under influence of obstructions

Individual boat-skins would seam possible, with reworking the original skins. (That is not an "official" feature AND is on your own risk!) Eventhen "Custom-Skins" are not automatically shared with other players. Its just the 2 default-skins that can be replaced by custom-skins.

Maps (Courses) can be down and up-loaded. More about that in the forums.
