Q: how is a rating calculated?
A: Check the 'show details' box when scoring a race, to have a hard look at the full calculations. (You jave to be a host to have access) As long as you do NOT SUBMIT a result, by calculating results you can test what is happening.
Q : how does the formula work?
A: Basically the maximum gain in rating would be when the lower rated j wins over the higher rated i, that would be very unexpected when i's rating is much higher then j's The minimum gain in rating would be almost 0 when higher rated j wins over lower rated i as expected that would be a sure bet when i's rating is much lower then j's. Rating changes varies from a large jump upward for a big win (against all odds) till till a big drop with a big loss. In the middle, small wins and small losses don't change much in your rating.
Q: How do you prevent abuse?
A: Simple, the Admin is God, users should tremble. Seriously? Its a closed system, you need to identify, we trust and we have a stick.
Q: How do I prevent trouble?
A: Never ever report a result on witch participants do not agree.
Q: Whats RR2 ?
A: ISAF rules of racing nr 2 ( yes go look it up! ) Please note that section A rules take presidence over all other sections. As per NOR and SI all Cases, and Calls are inapplicable as any VSK Umpire's call is deemed invalid where they do not agree with our Principal Principal . RR2 is the legitimation for our principal principal "unfair behaviour leads to immediate DSQ" Please verify alternate Sailing Instructions and or Notices of Racing apply wich may accompany any event, tournament or ranking list. Contact the event manager (Rankinglist Owner), for Sailing Instruction and or Notices of Racing.
Q: whats RR14?
A: The biggest mistake in virtualracing. Causing a collisoion, actually not preventing a collision is punishable per ISAF Racing rules of Sailing. Somehow in Virtual sailing collisions are needed to decide on the other rules... this does compete! with RR2 and our PP... thus decisions may go against you even if the Umpire is with you... be carefull out there.
Q: Whats PP?
A: Principal Principal. Sail fair. Sail as if on a real boat, protest as a real boat (not by causing a collision to prove the point, or cause the umpire to make a call) but by talking to the committee, or preverably your opponent after the race first. You should claim a protest during the race, you should not discuss them during racing. Take a penalty when you broke a rule NOT when the umpire makes a call... got it? There's a perfect rating system if you don't like this elsewhere on the internet. ;)
Q: Is there an advantage in racing a lot?
A: Yes there is, your rating becomes very stable. Meaning your day off, or a particular lucky day will go by unnoticed... your rating will hardly change.
Q: is there an advantage in racing against the same boats over and over?
A: No there is not, ratings will change until an equilibrium is reached, your rating is measured only against a small number of boats, and your rating becomes more stable with every race. The further apart the rating of the winner and looser are, the smaller the change becomes. (small win and small loss)
Q: what's the problem with racing against different boats all the time?
A: There's no problem, your rating will become more accurate and more stable with each race. Within the rating system there are no unknowns, just check the rating of your opponents
Q: How come my rating doesn't change anymore?
A: After a boat has competed in 1 race, we expect it's rating to be somewhat
dubious was this a once a lifetime achievement, or was it an off-day.
After a boat has competed in 10 races, we can somewhat trust its rating,
we more or less expect the skipper and boot to sail with a skill expressed
in the rating.
After a boat has competed in 100 races, we may presume that a result that
deviates from our expectation is a once a lifetime lucky day or a bad day off,
we still expect the boot to race like it did in the previous 99 races.
This means we decrease the effect of the races' result with increasing number
of races for a particular rating.
Q: Last year i did many races and my rating was stable, this year i lost a race and dropped many places on the ranking list. What happened?
A: Your rating was getting too old. We only consider the number of races in the last 365 days. You did not race for a year so your rating changed with the maximum rate in your first race after your break. Don't worry your second race can catapult you back up again.
Q: What's with the points?
A:There are races for Tournaments events etc. that are scored by points. Scoring is done by lowest points. As each race result is preserved. Scoring tables can be produced from the database, you also can keep track by looking at the tournaments races list, it shows your points for each race and your total points.
Q: Where are the races to join?
A:There may be races for each Tournament, List and events etc. To see races:
Q: How do I become host?
A:You must indicate that you can host. You must set the parameter 'host' to 'yes' in your profile. When synchronised with the website user registration, go to your website profile and change the setting host to 'yes'. If the Ranking and Rating is used as "stand alone" set "host" to yes at registration, or ask your administrator.
Q: How do I join the Committee?
A:You have to ask the administrators to make you an eventmanager
Q: How do I correct a score?
A:You don't. Ask your administrator or eventmanager. Take note that even when administrators are volunteers, it takes time to rollback scores, more so when correct scores are accumulated on top of wrong scores In a worsed case scenario ending in a recallibration of all ratings for that event. If you regularly score races wrong expect to be banned from hosting. If your score is an honest mistake allert administrators as soon as possible. If you are a participant in a wrongly scored race, contact the host, not the eventmanager.
